Just in: Following trend of the last few months, the City of Austin’s unemployment rate dropped again in August to remain lowest unemployment rate among the top 25 largest U.S. cities.

Based on the latest preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the city of Austin’s unemployment rate is 3.5% as of August 2021 (in July, it was 3.9%).

  • Following Austin (3.5%) is Nashville (3.8%), Seattle (4.2%), Charlotte (4.6%), and Indianapolis and Jacksonville (4.7%).
  • Where other Texas cities rank: San Antonio is No. 7 (4.9%), Dallas is tied for No. 9 (5.2%), Fort Worth is tied for No. 12 (5.3%), El Paso is No. 14 (5.5%), and Houston is No. 16 (6%).

Of note: The city’s unemployment rate fell in line with the Austin metro’s rate. The metro rate dipped from 4.2% in July to 3.8% in August.
