Austin-Area Unemployment Rises to 2.7%
AUSTIN – Figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission today show the unemployment rate in the Austin-Round Rock MSA rose from 2.4% in December 2019 to 2.7% in January 2020. The 2.7% unemployment rate represented 34,489 residents seeking employment. The region’s unemployment rate remained below both the Texas (3.8%) and national (4.0%) rates.
The Austin-Round Rock MSA collectively lost 15,400 jobs in January 2020. The region’s 3.6% annual growth rate represented the collective addition of 39,400 jobs since January 2019.
Further, unemployment in the Capital Area/Travis County increased from 2.3% in December 2019to 2.6% in January 2020. The 2.6% unemployment rate represented 19,890 residents seeking employment. The Capital Area/Travis County unemployment rate remained below the overall Austin-Round Rock MSA, state of Texas and national rates.
