Healthcare is a growing industry in Central Texas and many young people here are interested in a healthcare career. They may not know exactly what they want to do, however. So, to help inspire the next generation of skilled healthcare workers, we joined the Central Texas Healthcare Partnership to host the annual Nursing Academy on February 7 at Concordia University Texas in Austin!

Fifty-nine junior and high school students from Austin, Bastrop, Del Valle, Georgetown, Leander, Marble Falls, Pflugerville, and Round Rock independent school districts participated in this daylong event.

The curious high schoolers heard from Concordia students about how to prepare for nursing school, nursing career pathways, and what life as a nursing student is like. Also presenting were staff from WFS Capital Area to discuss how

The students also received hands-on opportunities to explore nursing in Concordia’s simulation labs, experiencing CPR, birthing, injections, and more.

“My favorite part was the delivery room. I had the opportunity to deliver the baby and deliver the placenta. This was very exciting for me, because I have always wanted to go into the medical field, but I haven’t necessarily known what I wanted to do,” said one student. “With this experience, I now feel like I know what I want to go in to, and I feel very secure.”

“I have always wanted to go into child delivery, so that just confirmed it,” said another student who completed the birthing simulation lab.

The Central Texas Healthcare Partnership was founded in early 2018 under the leadership of three Central Texas healthcare industry leaders: Baylor Scott & White Health, Ascension Seton, and St. David’s HealthCare.

The Partnership’s mission is to sustain and grow the Central Texas healthcare industry while expanding pathways to good jobs for local residents. WFS Capital Area provides staff support to assist with the coordination of the partnership.

WFS Capital Area participates in multiple industry sector partnerships. These are a proven and employer-led workforce development strategy.
