Workforce Solutions Capital Area partners with many local healthcare employers to train and hire the workforce for this key local industry. One of our partners is South University in Austin. Here, in their own words, are how they are creating positive community impact locally.

South University’s Austin Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program in Round Rock is dedicated to serving our local communities. South University BSN students are committed to serve a minimum of 60 hours in our local communities for graduation from our BSN program. South BSN students care for our communities through vaccine clinics, food banks, complete blood pressure screenings at health fairs and so much more.

Recently, South University BSN students were at the Round Rock splash pad distributing water and educating our community on the signs and symptoms of heat stroke and dehydration. Other students educated patrons at a local library on sexually transmitted infections and provided free condoms to the public.

  • Another community project involved proper handwashing education and dispensed free antibacterial soap at a local dialysis clinic.

South University recently partnered with Traditions Health to train our students to be certified hospice volunteers. Carrie Cadenhead is the Clinical Director of Traditions Health and a graduate (2018) from our BSN program. Carrie has returned to our South University campus to provide virtual dementia training. This special training ensures our nursing students experience neuropathy, decreased vision, and decreased hearing to enhance empathy for our clients during community clinical hours.

  • In addition, the South University BSN program requires each student to successfully complete two courses on Caring for Diverse and Vulnerable Populations. South University’s emphasis on caring for our community is unique to BSN programs.

The South University Sigma Theta Tau honor society and Student Nurse Association are always looking for opportunities to volunteer in our communities. South University’s BSN Program is dedicated to serving our local communities and looks forward to future opportunities to care in our communities. Contact Dr. Cynthia Cruz at ccruz@southuniversity.edu with your potential opportunities for our nursing students to serve our local communities.

South University is a member of the Central Texas Healthcare Partnership. The partnership was founded in early 2018 under the leadership of three Central Texas healthcare industry leaders: Baylor Scott & White Health, Ascension Seton, and St. David’s HealthCare.
