For 25 years, Paul Viebrock worked for just two companies.  He graduated college in December 1984 and immediately began working for a phone company.  In 1999, he parlayed his experience into a position at an Austin-based software company.

Paul quickly realized what many older workers have struggled with during the recession:  some companies are reluctant to hire experienced, qualified workers when finances are tight.  It's often more cost effective to hire younger, less-experienced workers and provide training.  Paul found himself over-qualified and unsuccessful in his job search.

Luckily, a friend reached out and told him about Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Paul began attending Workforce Solutions' Job Search Workshops to help optimize his job search.

"I took all of them," he recalls.  "They really helped bring me up to speed on the 21stcentury job market."

The workshops, which include topics like Job Search Planning, Advanced Resume Writing, and Interviewing, helped Paul land several interviews.  Unfortunately, those interviews didn't lead to job offers.  However, they did help Paul understand how to become more competitive.

"I realized from talking with the employers that I needed to add to my skill set," he says.

Paul then worked closely with Marti Sivers, one of Workforce Solutions' Program Managers, to identify Project Management Professional (PMP) certification as a skill that could strengthen his resume and help him succeed.

"Marti was a kind ear," said Paul.  "It was very helpful to receive such wonderful guidance and support."

Paul received tuition assistance from Workforce Solutions to complete his PMP certification, which he accomplished in late 2010.

Armed now with a better understanding of the job market and a new certification, Paul resumed his job search with renewed confidence.  Within months, he was hired as a Vice President for a software development company and relocated to Nevada, with a 12% salary increase!  The employer specifically told him that not only did his PMP certification make the difference, but they valued him more because he was a seasoned professional.

Paul is grateful for the support and assistance Workforce Solutions provided, and he urges other experienced workers struggling with unemployment to seek out the available help.

"There's so much help out there," he explained.  "Everyone can benefit from the guidance and assistance."
