Applied Biosystems by Life Technologies is a Texas employer that is truly on the cutting-edge.  The company is a leader in the emerging Biotechnology industry sector in the Capital Area, creating jobs and opportunities for Texans while working with others in their industry to promote economic development and expansion.

They are also an exemplary partner of the public workforce system.  The company has participated in several ground-breaking initiatives with Workforce Solutions designed to increase public awareness of jobs available in Biotechnology and ensure appropriate training is available.

In 2008, they were instrumental in helping Workforce Solutions connect with BioAustin, an industry council formed by the Austin Chamber of Commerce.  The relationship with BioAustin allowed Workforce Solutions to produce curriculum at the local community college that is industry-verified and relevant to demand occupations.

This relationship also enabled Workforce Solutions to produce a series of video segments, available at www.CoolAustinJobs.com, highlighting various companies and occupations within the emerging Biotechnology industry sector.

In addition to supporting important workforce and economic development initiatives, Applied is committed to the wellbeing of their employees.  The company offers several innovative programs to workers, including a career pathway framework to support job enrichment and advancement, a back-up child care program that provides no-cost access to temporary care, and a commitment to supporting volunteer and community engagement opportunities.

News Briefs

Entrepreneur Magazine recently put together an article detailing the different business advantages in cities around the country.  Austin is the best "Creative Center" in the country, according to the magazine, based on its "combination of art and commerce" that makes it "one of the nation's most progressive and proactive entrepreneurial centers."

Austin joins three other Texas cities at the top of a list of U.S. metro areas with the strongest job growth over the past five years.  Houston leads the nation, adding 129,800 new private-sector jobs between June 2005 and June 2010.  Dallas is second with 71,300 new jobs, Austin comes in third with 56,100 positions created, and San Antonio added 32,600 jobs to place fourth.  Raleigh, NC is fifth, with 22,100 new positions.

For a regular look at different workforce trends that affect the Capital Area, tune in to Fox 7's morning show "Good Day Austin" every other Wednesday around 9:10am for an interview with Workforce Solutions.  Click here, here, and here for examples of what you'll see.
