February 2017 Labor Market Update

AUSTIN – Figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission show the unemployment rate in the Austin-Round Rock MSA* increased from 3.5%** in January 2017 to 3.7% in February 2017. The 3.7% unemployment rate represented 41,700 residents seeking employment. The region’s unemployment remained one point below both the state of Texas (4.9%) and national (4.7%) rates***.

The Austin-Round Rock MSA collectively added 2,700 jobs in February 2017. The region’s 2.7% annual growth rate represented the overall addition of 27,000 jobs since February 2016.

Further, the unemployment rate in the Capital Area/Travis County**** increased from 3.3%** in January 2017 to 3.6% in February 2017. The 3.6% unemployment rate represented more than 24,500 residents seeking employment. The Capital Area/Travis County unemployment rate remained below the overall Austin-Round Rock MSA, state of Texas and national rates.

January 2017 Labor Market Update

AUSTIN – Figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission show the unemployment rate in the Austin-Round Rock MSA* increased from 3.2%** in December 2016 to 3.5% in January 2017. The 3.5% unemployment rate represented 39,000 residents seeking employment. The region’s unemployment remained more than one point below both the state of Texas (4.8%) and national (4.8%) rates***.

Despite the collective loss of 10,000 job in the Austin-Round Rock MSA in January 2017, the region’s 3.5% annual growth rate represented the overall addition of 34,000 jobs since January 2016.

Further, the unemployment rate in the Capital Area/Travis County**** increased from 3.1%** in December 2016 to 3.3% in January 2017. The 3.3% unemployment rate represented nearly 23,000 residents seeking employment. The Capital Area/Travis County unemployment rate remained below the overall Austin-Round Rock MSA, state of Texas and national rates.

December 2016 Labor Market Update

AUSTIN – According to the Texas Workforce Commission, unemployment in the Austin – Round Rock MSA* crept up from 3.0%** in November 2016 to 3.2% in December 2016. The 3.2% unemployment rate represented 35,500 residents seeking employment. The region’s unemployment remained more than one point below both the Texas (4.6%) and national (4.5%) rates.

Further, unemployment in the Capital Area/Travis County*** increased from 2.9%** in November 2016 to 3.1% in December 2016. The 3.1% unemployment rate represented more than 21,000 residents seeking employment. The Capital Area/Travis County unemployment rate remained below the overall Austin – Round Rock MSA, state of Texas and national rates.

WIOA Board Plan Public Comment

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) requires workforce boards to develop a four-year plan that identifies and describes policies and procedures for the provision of workforce services, as well as local activities that are in line with the Texas State Plan.    
 

The Workforce Solutions Capital Area Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Local Workforce Development Board Plan for Program Years 2017-2020 (the Plan) outlines the provision of program services in Travis County, Texas.

The Plan must be developed openly and be available for public comment for 30 days.  Comments submitted during the public comment period that represent disagreement with the Plan must be submitted with the Plan to the Texas Workforce Commission.  Public comment can be made in two ways:  via email and in person.

 
  • Email:  Public comment can be submitted via email to yael.trevino@wfscapitalarea.com until February 16, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. CST.
  • In person:  As a part of Workforce Solutions Capital Area’s Community Engagement Committee meeting, individuals and groups can provide public comment January 25, 2017 between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m.  The meeting will be held at Workforce Solutions Capital Area’s North Career Center located at 6505 Airport Blvd, Suite 101E, Austin, TX 78752.

November 2016 Unemployment Update

AUSTIN – According to the Texas Workforce Commission, unemployment in the Austin – Round Rock MSA* dropped from 3.2%** in October 2016 to 3.0% in November 2016. The 3.0% unemployment rate represented 33,700 residents seeking employment. The region’s unemployment remained more than one point below both the Texas (4.2%) and national (4.4%) rates.

The Austin-Round Rock MSA collectively gained 5,600 jobs in November 2016. The region’s annual growth rate was 2.0%, representing the addition of 19,500 jobs since November 2015.

Further, unemployment in the Capital Area/Travis County*** dropped from 3.1%** in October 2016 to 2.9% in November 2016. The 2.9% unemployment rate represented more than 20,000 residents seeking employment. The Capital Area/Travis County unemployment rate remained slightly below the overall Austin – Round Rock MSA, state of Texas and national rates.
